  2. My topic is: Are elementary students receiving adequate keyboarding instruction in order to master the Technology Applications TEKS for keyboarding?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Honestly, no. They need to begin learning in 4-5th grade, so that when they get to JH, they have the keyboard mastered so they can begin working with software that is going to dictate their interaction with technology from that point forward...not just play "educational games"

  12. My topic of research is regarding the First Moves Chess program. My school started this program about 3 years ago with 2nd and 3rd. This year we will teach it all the way through fifth. The research I want to dive into is, since this is a district expectation, how are we reaching our struggling students. Many times the same kids struggle in all content areas. This also proves true with chess. We began teaching chess to build social skills and higher level thinking. Are we truly reaching "ALL" kids? If not, how do we need to differentiate to accommodate them all?

  20. My action research topic and questions:

All classroom teachers will work on the creation of a classroom web page. Teachers will have their web pages live by the end of the school year. Classroom pages will enhance parent/teacher/student communication as well as improve academic achievement in the area of Mathematics. Through surveys, parent conferences, and test data, we have found that parent communication and math scores are the two areas in need of improvement. Campus and teacher websites can help target both of these areas. Administrative and teachers sites will provide a more transparent look into school happenings.Websites that have links to math sites, podcasts, and vodcasts will allow parent to help their students at home.

The following questions will be investigated:

What part does a classroom website play in regards to communication with parents?

How are parents using the campus website, and how is it affecting communication?

What are students mainly using the campus or teacher website for, and has it improved communication with campus staff?

How is the classroom website helping improve academic achievement?

  22. NCLB requires "Technology Literate Students, Technology Literate Teachers, and Technology integrated across the curriculum.

To measure our progress toward the goal of "Technology Literate Students," NCLB required implementing a Technology Proficiency Assessment for 8th grade students and reporting the results through the STaR Chart. For three years my district has reported embarrassing statistics about the technology proficiency of our 8th grade students. The low scores by our 8th graders not only indicates they lack technology skills, but also reflects our teachers lack those skills and/or are not truly integrating technology into the curriculum. These concerns led to the development of the question my action research will address:

"Will the implementation of TechCONNECT (Technology Applications 6-8th grade curriculum) and Atomic Learning (online technology training service) improve student performance on the 8th grade Technology Proficiency Assessment and increase teacher proficiency levels in the key areas of Teaching and Learning and Educator Preparation on the STaR Chart?"

  23. My action research plan involves creating a technology rich classroom and comparing it to the traditional classroom to verify higher academic achievement through the use of technology both with hardware (document cameras, MOBIS,Classroom Performance system, etc.) and Web 2.0 tools.

  24. My action reseach is based on the effectiveness of positive motivation or intervention with At Risk students. My population is 85 9th grade repeaters, most of whom are also Economically Disadvantaged. This is the first year we will be located in a SWAS which is adjacent to the main campus. The scope of the "rewards" (I know this is no longer a politically correct word; but, these children have, for the most part, never been granted special considerations)will range from the minimal such as free dress day to major field trips. The discipline in this environment is very structured; so, this is also be a means of temporing that rigidity while developing their internal desire to succeed.

I will also be concentrating on parental involvement. These parents, by now, have had pratically nothing but negative contact from the school. Many are looking for ways to help their children.

The third type of positive intervention will be the involvement of the teachers on a personal level. We are being allowed to return to the Homeroom first schedule that many of the lower grades use. This will allow teachers personal time with a small group of students each morning.

The evaluation will be based on the comparison between the previous year's attendance, disciplinary records, and TAKS scores and this year's for the same students.

The ultimate goal is to help foster their desire to stay in school and eventually graduate with their peers.

Since this is the first year of this program, I would welcome any and all suggestions. I have already received several, such as music and "sock day." Although these students are High School, they seem to respond on a variety of levels. I would also appreciate some warning as to the pitfalls I may encounter.

    Thank you,
    SS

  29. My research topic involves creating a curriculum guide for the use of all the new technology tools now available at my school. Many teachers do not use the new tools because they do not know how to integrate them into daily lessons. My goal is to create binders for all teachers to use throughout the school year to assist in using the new tools. 42. My action research project is as follows:
Through the collaboration with various supervisors across the district and on my campus via emails and in person and over the phone, I decided to do action research on "adapting our teaching to meet the needs of today’s student with diversified needs of students".
An operational definition of my target population: Third grade level teacher team of 3 to 4 teachers.
I selected my sample through suggestions made by my campus site supervisor, special education specialists, and the district special education director. This need is based on our 2010 SBDM committee plan and from specific needs outlined in my internship plan.
I will conduct my research by applying information and skills developed in EDLD 5311, involving my intern plan, and the information and proficiency gained in EDLD 5301 Action Research. I will create a comprehensive campus improvement action plan which will allow me to specifically target the selected action research project on understanding allowable accommodations in the classroom and on state testing. The significance of this study will be to train or allow the third grade team to know the specifics of the accommodations allowed in the classroom and on state testing to ensure equal access of special education students to the general curriculum and decrease the general education teacher’s frustration in planning and implementing these accommodations.

    Pearson's Correlation Coefficient.

I am going to do research on the use of a rubric developed by the University Institutional Effectiveness Committee. My research consists of determining if four independent reviewers can successfully score assessment reports with six dimensions with a variation of scores less than 1.0.
Each of the four reviewers will review 50 reports, in which 20 of them will be scored by all four scorers. We will compare the correlations of the twenty report scores and determine the consistency of scoring with the rubric. The twenty reports that are reviewed by all, are unknown to everyone, therefore all participants are blind to the reports that will be compared.

  49. Action Research Topics:

I would like to look at how PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) Systems have a positive affect on school climate/culture.

Purpose: I want to specifically investigate if it ultimately reduces discipline referrals over time; if it increases student engagement; if it improves teacher morale; if it increases teacher communication with parents; and finally if it contributes to an overall perception of increased school safety by all stakeholders. I plan on collecting data from a variety of resources that include but are not limited to interviews, surveys, discipline referrals, etc.

Significance: I believe the significance of this study is that it will benefit the administrators and teachers of the campus in knowing areas of success and areas that need more attention when it comes to routines or practices with in the PBIS Systems. It will benefit the students in their increased awareness of why such structures are important and the relation of such systems to creating a safer, more predictable, and explicit environment that supports consistant expectations campus wide. It will also benefit the parents in their awareness of the efforts/systems within the school that support an equitable, safe, positive, and supportive environment for the children to be in all day, every day.

  51. Thoughts designed to improve fluency on my inquiry project...
    1. Examining the work: Setting the Foundation – I have determined to use an inquiry in order to provide a comprehensive four-year plan to assist students entering Rockwall High School (and other RISD students) who want to pursue a Performing Arts career. This plan should help not only the students who have this particular educational goal, but also should help our district to provide an exceptional curriculum in our Fine and Performing Arts Department.

    2. Analyzing data – I will gather data from Texas colleges (and Oklahoma City University), from research sources like TMEA and Cedfa, from interviews with currently performing artists, and from brainstorming sessions with the RHS Performing Arts staff, counselors, and administrators. With the data, my colleagues and I will be able to determine our best path as we tweak our curriculum and make recommendations for our students to assist them in meeting their education goals.

    3. Developing deeper understanding – I’m very excited to be able to convene the Performance Arts Staff, Counselors, and Principals into a focus group. These are all mature, seasoned professionals who have much to offer. Together we should be able to devise exceptional recommendations for our students.

    4. Engaging in Self-Reflection – One topic of reflection I will undertake will be to maintain awareness that the goal is to benefit the students, not to impose my own ideas and preferences. I will continue to reflect upon the idea of servant leadership, the goal of proactive communication, and to receive new ideas as possible evidence of positive growth rather than as a threat to what has always been perceived as “the best”.

    5. Exploring Programmatic Patterns – Before beginning to make interview calls, I will carefully plan the questions I want to ask, and will leave time in each interview to allow the person being interviewed to suggest ideas I haven’t thought to include. Before convening the focus group I will distribute the compiled notes and the list of interview questions so these professionals will have the opportunity to reflect on the topics before we begin to work together.

    6. Determining direction – The focus group will be a very strong ensemble to evaluate the research data and formulate appropriate responses. This team will work collaboratively both within the meetings and in small groups between meetings.

    7. Taking action for school improvement – I will use the action research template to help me maintain good organization and a timeline for action.

Sustaining improvement – One of my own goals is to continue to re-assess on a regular basis even after this particular project reaches its original conclusion. Just as curriculum should be regularly revisited, so also should the best practices for preparing our students for their lifework be continuously examined and improved.

  59. : What effect does deconstructing standards have on student performance in middle school science?
The rationale for this question comes from the current initiative on my campus. I am fortunate enough to work for a district with a strong curriculum department. This department deconstructs the state standards (TEKS) and sends them out in the form of UBD’s (Understanding by Design.) Teachers in turn review the information and focus primarily on the activities. Since teachers do not have to delve into the standards, many of these activities created or used, by the teachers, do not match up with the depth and rigor of the state standards. Our initiative is to train teachers to deconstruct the standards for themselves. This will lead to activities that match the depth and rigor the TEKS require. Assessments will also begin to mirror the level of understanding written in the standard. My goal is to determine the effectiveness of teachers understanding the state standards, which will lead to the development of focused activities and assessments. This is turn should lead to better student performance

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is a terrific topic for research! UBD is an initiative that may make significant differences to improve student and staff performance. Studying what makes it work will open opportunities for other campuses. Keep us posted!
